Rocket Stove

The majority of out cooking is done on a Rocket Stove - a super efficient woodburning stove. Here is a copy of our handout blurb with a bit of an explanation.

Pictures of our build:

We had this made up at a fabricators to be the stove innards, but it proved to be too heavy for the trailer
So we made one out of folded and bolted mild steel veg oil cans

The outer vessel originally held polyester resin. Here it is after burning and sanding down.

The circular plate here will hold in the insulation and the bolts act as pot stands.

Filling the stove with vermiculite insulation
Finished!

The strengths of the rocket stove were really demonstrated at Sunrise festival. The event was a bit of a washout and the winds were so strong that we had to abandon our shelter on Saturday. So for the whole day our cooking was done outside, in the rain with no protection from the elements. Despite this, the rocket stove was kept burning for almost the entire day. The enclosed fire is not so open to the wind compared to an open fire, and the real beauty of it is that, although the protruding sticks do get rained on, they are preheated as they enter the lower part of the internal L, and by the time they reach the flames they are dry! It really is the perfect stove for outdoor, foul weather cooking.
